EVN Online Training Day

JIVE is organizing the third online training session designed to support first-time users of the European VLBI Network (EVN). During the session, we guide you through the key steps of planning, preparing proposals, and scheduling observations.

Tuesday, 29 April 2025, from 10:00–17:00 CEST iCalendar invitation

Other time zones: 04:00-11:00 EDT, 08:00-15:00 UTC, 16:00-23:00 CST, 18:00-01:00 AEST

The training welcomes astronomers at all levels and requires no prior experience in radio astronomy techniques, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), or using the EVN. Participation is free; however, registration is mandatory.

How to participate

The training session will be conducted online via Zoom, with Mattermost available for follow-up discussions and interactions. Registered participants will receive Zoom access details via email a few days before the event. This session offers an excellent opportunity to engage directly with EVN Support Scientists and address any questions related to EVN operations.

Morning Session (10:00-12:30 CEST)

Introduction to the EVN

Want to learn why the European VLBI Network is the most sensitive Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array in the world observing at centimeter wavelengths? This segment will showcase how the EVN enables astronomers to observe sources at milliarcsecond resolution.

  • Discover the EVN's capabilities and how these observations can elevate your science
  • Explore diverse science cases currently utilizing the EVN
  • Learn about observatory capabilities and observational modes
  • See how JIVE supports you through every step of your research

Proposal Preparation

Interested in applying for EVN observations but have questions about the process? In this section, EVN Support Scientists will provide a comprehensive overview of proposal preparation and address your specific questions.

  • Navigate the EVN Observation Planner
  • Develop a complete proposal from science case to submission
  • Master the Northstar online proposal tool (the EVN's proposal submission system)

Afternoon session (14:30-17:00 CEST)

Schedule Preparation

Have you secured observing time with the EVN but need guidance on producing a schedule file? This session will walk you through the scheduling process for EVN observations.

  • Identify essential requirements for scheduling EVN observations
  • Use pySCHED to create effective schedule files
  • Optimize your schedule and avoid common mistakes

Registration is required to participate. Please visit the registration page to sign up.
