JIVE is organizing the third online training session designed to support first-time users of the European VLBI Network (EVN). During the session, we guide you through the key steps of planning, preparing proposals, and scheduling observations.
Date and Time:
Tuesday 29 April 2025 from 10:00-17:00 CEST
The training requires no prior experience in radio astronomy techniques, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), or using the EVN. Participation is free; however, registration is mandatory to attend.

How to participate
The training session will be conducted online via Zoom. Mattermost will be used for follow-up discussions and interactions with the participants. Registered participants will receive Zoom access details via email a few days before the event.
This session offers an excellent opportunity to engage directly with EVN Support Scientists and address any queries related to EVN operations.
Agenda
Tuesday 29 April 2025 10:00-12:30 CEST (08:00-10:30 UTC)
General introduction to the EVN
Do you want to know more about the European VLBI Network and why it is the most sensitive Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array in the world observing at centimeter wavelengths? This segment is meant to take you along the possibilities that the EVN offers to any astronomer to observe their sources at milliarcsecond resolution.
- Get to know the EVN and how these observations can take your science to a new level.
- Summary of the science cases being done with the EVN.
- Observatory capabilities.
- Observational modes.
- See how JIVE is here to help you every step of the way.
Proposal Preparation
Are you interested in applying for EVN observations to study your sources but you have many doubts and questions? Join this training! You will receive an overview of all the proposal-preparation steps, and you will be able to discuss the what's and how's, with the EVN Support Scientists.
This part will be divided into the following steps:
- The EVN Observation Planner.
- How to make a proposal. From the science case to the proposal submission.
- The Northstar online proposal tool.
Tuesday 29 April 2025 14:30-17:00 CEST (12:30-15:00 UTC)
Schedule Preparation Training
You already got observing time with the EVN but you are not sure how to produce a schedule file? This training will guide you on how to schedule EVN observations.
- What is needed to schedule an EVN observation? What data and information do we require from you?
- pySCHED and how to create a schedule file.
- Optimizing the schedule and what to be aware of.
